Accurately Measure Deep Drainage and Evapotranspiration
A complete small weighable and tension controlled field lysimeter. Combined with tensiometers, soil moisture sensors, data logger with optional GPRS modem, lightning protection, and powered by solar panels. This is the idea of the UMS Smart Field Lysimeter.
Small Scale with Big Possibilities
Sure, lysimeter surface and depth could not be big enough, but this small setup gives information on water and solute balance issues that you could only attain with weighing lysimeters with tension controlled suction at a lower cost.
Easier Installation
Excavating the undisturbed soil monolith is made easier with the tool set that is specially designed for use with the Smart Field Lysimeter.
Flexibility in Size
The UMS Smart Field Lysimeter is available in 3 diferent lengths of 30, 60, and 90 cm giving it flexiblility to fit a variety of applications and site conditions. This flexibility in design allows for customized layouts to suit the needs of different research needs and site limitations.
Field-Identical Water Conditions
A bi-directional pump is used to maintain the hydraulic boundary condition within the lysimeter. This means the field moisture is measured and transmitted into the lysimeter. If the soil in the lysimeter is drier that the reference field conditions, water will be pumped back into the lysimeter from the drainage reservoir. If the soil in the lysimeter is wetter than the reference field conditions, the pump will pull water out of the lysimeter to match field conditions. This technique ensures true field conditions inside the lysimeter.
Direct Measurement of the Water Balance
By weighing both the lysimeter and the drainage barrel, increases of stored water due to rain or irrigation and losses of water due to evapotransiration and deep drainage are directly measured and easly computed mathemateically.
